BHASKARACHARYA, was a great mathematician in the 12th century, and he was proficient in ASTRONOMY AND ASTROLOGY too. He had a beautiful daughter named LILAVATI, and she was the apple of his eye.
LILAVATI was a curious, intelligent and a very well-behaved girl, and BHASKARACHARYA, was proud of his daughter.
As LILAVATI grew up to be a young maiden, BHASKARACHARYA, examined her horoscope, and was devastated to know that LILAVATI wouldn't be married, and if married, would be widowed.
He did tremendous research, with all his erudition, and finally concluded an auspicious time, in which if LILAVATI is married, can reverse the horrendous prediction in LILAVATI 'S horoscope.
He found a prospective groom for LILAVATI, and to accurately ascertain the MUHURTA for the marriage ceremony, he with all his knowledge of mathematics, invented a device, where He placed a cup with a small hole at the bottom of the vessel filled with water, arranged so that the cup would sink at the beginning of the propitious hour.
Everything was ready and the cup was placed in the vessel, when Lilavati, who usually was an obedient girl, out of curiosity bent over the vessel and a pearl from her nose ring fell into the cup and blocked the hole in it, and the timing was tampered. Unaware of this, the marriage was conducted in the wrong muhurta, and as soon as the marriage was concluded, the bridegroom was bit by a poisonous deadly Cobra, and died, leaving BHASKARACHARYA aghast, and LILAVATI inconsolable.
Later when he examined the cup, he found it partially blocked by a small pearl. BHASKARACHARYA realised that no human intellect, could be greater than the divine decision.
It is then that he decided to write a book on his daughter's name, one that would remain till the end of time.
He wrote the greatest treatise on Arithmetic and named it "LILAVATI".
Not only did he write the book, but he trained LILAVATI to be the greatest brains in mathematics, and astronomy.
